10 tips to prepare yourself for the practical exam

 FOR ENGLISH PLEASE SCROLL DOWN

1. Good preparation is half the battle! (Dutch saying ;))

Make sure you have had suffucient driving lessons. When you have the control over the vehicle and have mastered all parts of your driver training, you should be able to pass the practical test. Your instructor has prepared you well and you can be confident that you are ready for the exam. Don’t be thrifty with lessons in the week(s) before your exam! In the week of your exam (or the week before if there is no other option), take at least another 1-2 lessons to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. Better one lesson too many than one lesson too few! Because the costs of a re-exam + the lessons, if you fail, are higher than 1-2 extra lessons.

2. Don’t make the exam a big thing

You do not have to worry about the exam. The examiner is not out to put you down. Especially if you have taken the interim test, you know what to expect and what is expected of you. No more and no less. The examiner expects nothing more from you than your instructor!

3. Don’t listen to the tips of others

Everyone wants the best for you and means well, but the tips of others (especially people who have had their driver’s license for a long time) can make you insecure. Don’t listen to this, rather go to your instructor if you have questions or want tips. Your instructor knows exactly how you drive and what you should and should not pay attention to.

4. Do not try to drive flawless

Do not judge yourself and do not put unnecessary pressure on yourself. You have shown during your driving lessons that you drive well enough to take the exam. Do not drive differently or try to drive the ‘best ride ever’, with this you set the bar unnecessarily high for yourself. Just keep calm and if you make a small mistake fix it savely and neatly, do not get caught up in it – let it go and focus on the next part right away. You will be forgiven for one mistake! Make sure you solve difficult situations safely, take a good look around you. If you have your driver’s license, you will also make mistakes, it’s about how you handle the situation and how you solve it. Remember that an instructor and examiner also make mistakes, nobody drives perfectly!

5. Drive confidently and decisively

Show that you can drive and believe in your abilities. Show initiative in traffic and show that you are decisive, make decisions and actively participate in traffic. Even if this is not your strong point, it is important to pay extra attention to this.

6. Speed

Do not pay too much attention to this, you do not always have to (and cannot) drive exactly the maximum speed. Something (1-2 km/h) faster (preferably not slower) than the maximum speed is fine! As long as you adapt your speed to the situation. And when the situation allows it, you drive on smoothly and ensure a good flow.

7. Be yourself!

Be yourself during the exam! The examiner will probably have a chat with you on the way, this is mainly intended to create a pleasant atmosphere. If you do not like this, please let us know in advance! If the talk distracts you and you are unable to concentrate as a result, you can of course wait with answering or reacting, or you do not react at all. The examiner will understand that! Keep your focus and your gaze on the road and traffic around you, so do not look at the examiner while chatting. And in the end it is about showing that you can drive smoothly, safely and independently, not whether you are (very) social.

8. What to expect from the exam

Do you not have an interim test or would you like to take another look at what to expect from the exam? Click here for a video of the CBR. Do you want tips from the examiner? Click here! Do you have a fear of failure exam? Click here to see what to expect from a fear to fail exam.

(Please note – the video’s are only available in dutch)

9. Rest well!

Make sure you start the exam well rested. Plan it so that besides the exam you do not have too many other things and appointments in your agenda and the focus is on good preparation for the exam. So do not go socializing the night before your exam! Bring a banana (or snickers/mars bar) to the exam so you can eat it before the exam!

10. Do you find it really exciting?

Do relaxation exercises! And start doing this a week or two before your exam. You can meditate, do breathing exercises, take a walk in nature, etc. There are also plenty of apps that can help you relax!

We wish you every success!
